Different Types of Yarn For Crochet

Whether you're knitting, sewing, or crocheting, you want your yarn projects to come out in the best possible state.

Crocheting is the art of using a small hook to create fabric or yarn pieces.

It can be hard to identify which yarn is the best for your crocheting needs. Knowing the different types and how they can affect your pieces will lead you to make wiser choices when choosing.

That is why I've developed a quick & easy guide just for you.

Types of Crochet Yarn?

Choosing your first yarn can be a hassle and it's often easy to get lost when deciding. There are yarn weights, types, and fibers, all of which have their own attributes.

The most common beginner-friendly would be:

Wool:

  • Most common yarn
  • Highly-versatile
  • Affordable
  • Durable and stretchable

Cotton:

  • Light
  • Breathable
  • Affordable
  • Machine-washable
  • Smooth and soft

Acrylic:

  • Retains heat
  • Durable
  • Machine-washable
  • Highly affordable
  • Great for beginners looking to practice first projects

What Yarn Do I Use?

The common types listed above would all considerably be great choices for your first yarn. I always recommend experimenting and seeing what suits you.

Yet keep in mind depending on your project, choosing a yarn will determine how it comes out and its longevity.

Now that you've chosen your first yarn material, it's time to choose a weight.

Weights:

  • Identified through numbers 0-7
  • The higher the number, the thicker the yarn will be
  • Choosing the right weight determines how your piece will turn out
  • The most common yarn weight is 4

I've linked a yarn chart you can find here.
