First of all, don’t panic, blot! The quicker you act to clean, the better.
- Assuming the spill is from a liquid, blot the spot with a clean rag to remove as much of the stain as you can.
- A mixture of soap and water, dish soap, or a similar gentle cleaner comes next.
- Use water to wash away the soap/cleaner and let the fabric air dry out in the open.
Be gentle with indoor upholstery.
- Indoor fabrics in general should not be treated with abrasive methods.
- Make use of a soft cloth or a gentle brush.
- Move from seam to seam, but remember not to wipe, but blot.
- Rinse the fabric thoroughly with water and wash away the soap.
- Let the fabric air dry and repeat the process as needed.
Outdoor upholstery might collect dirt, mold, or mildew.
- Consider soaking outdoor fabric in a mixture of ¼ cup of mild soap per gallon of lukewarm water. Rinse the fabric and air dry.
- It’s important to clean the entire surface of the fabric to avoid water spots.
- For really tough stains like mold and mildew, try a combination of 1 cup of bleach and ¼ cup of mild soap per gallon of water.
- Removable Sunbrella® fabric can be machine washed on a delicate, cold cycle. Be sure to close all zippers and use the normal amount of detergent.
- Air dry, the dryer can get too hot and cause the fabric to shrink.
Here are some extra tips to consider when cleaning your upholstery.
- Try baby wipes (test first on an unseen part of the surface you’re cleaning).
- Check your manufacturers manual for codes that tell you what to clean with (see chart below).
- Gentle is best!
- Only air dry your upholstery!
- Rinse well.
- If you need to iron, use the synthetic setting.
