How to Stop Yarn From Shedding

How to Stop Yarn From Shedding

If you've been working with yarn for a while, you'll know about the types of common problems you may run into. Whether it's pilling or shedding. They're all unfortunate burdens that are likely to occur.

Although as problematic as yarn can be, there are always solutions.

In this article, I will teach you how to stop your yarn from shedding.

Stopping Yarn From Shedding

Yarn sheds when the strands of the yarn start to unravel. Once they unravel there isn't enough pressure to hold the strands down, thus we are left with a yarn shed. It is a very natural and common occurrence for many.

  • One way to save yourself from frustration is simply just throwing out the yarn and buying a new one. It's sometimes best to just get rid of the old yarn, it saves time and energy.
  • Another way would just be to put your finished product in the washing machine. Make sure it is a washable yarn, generally, the washing will help eliminate any shedding from your finished projects.
  • Naturally, there's honestly not much you can do. When the tiny strands untangle themselves, it's almost impossible to put them back together.

Remember yarn shed is natural with many yarns. It's just something that will happen and there's not much you can do.

Stopping Yarn From Pilling

Pilling is when yarn fibers start to twist and turn to form tiny balls on top of items.

It is a common problem for knitted garments, or clothes to pill. It's mainly caused by friction. For example, you rub on your sleeves or don't properly care for your items.

  • You can use scissors or a sharp blade to de-pill. This can be a very time-consuming and tedious process. Make sure not to cut yourself.
  • You can hand wash your finished products.
  • Use a de-piller tool or a fabric shaver.
  • Accept pilling for what it is. Pilling is a very natural thing to happen when working with fabric.

The more you de-pill, the thinner your yarn will get. It's just something to keep in mind, so I'd recommend de-pilling occasionally and not too often.

Conclusion

Pilling and shedding are both stressful problems.

There is not much you can do, but altogether I have provided a few solutions that will be the most effective.

It's always good to take a step back and spend time somewhere else if it's causing you too much stress.
