How Much Yarn Do I Need Chart

One of the most common issues when beginning a new knitting or crochet project is figuring out how much yarn you will need.

Figuring out exactly how much yarn you need can be tricky because you need to factor in the size or your project, the weight of the yarn, and the type of stitch you using for your project will also influence how many yards of yarn you will need.

So it's not always a straightforward calculation.

To make it a little easier, we have created this handy chart you can use to calculate roughly how much yarn you will need for various projects:

How Many Yards Do I Need?

To figure out roughly how many yards of yarn that you need for your project, first take a look at the top of the chart to find your project.

In this chart we have these project types:

  • Hat
  • Scarf
  • Socks
  • Shawl
  • Sweater
  • Baby Blanket
  • Afghan

After you have identified your project type, you need to figure out what weight of yarn you will be using. The heavier the weight of the yarn is, the less yards you should need.

Our chart is divided into these yarn weight types:

  • 1 - Super Fine
  • 2 - Fine
  • 3 - Light
  • 4 - Medium
  • 5 - Bulky
  • 6 - Super Bulky
  • 7 - Jumbo

The number written in black in the chart is roughly how many yards you will need for each project type depending on the weight of the yarn.

The number in white is the number of meters of yarn you will need.

How Many Skeins Do I Need?

If you are wondering how many skeins of yarn you need for your project, you can still use our chart for an estimate.

You will have to read the label of the yarn you are looking at and determine how many yards each skein of yarn is.

From there just divide the estimate of how many yards you need by the yards per skein and that will give you a good estimate for how many skeins are needed for each project.
